What triggers desire in women to pop ‘Female Viagra’

Thu, 03 Aug 2017 11:13:15 +0000

The scientists from the University of Wisconsin-Madison were trying to investigate the effect of female Viagra on the woman’s brain. They made test on monkeys and during the tests it was found that the drug influences the brain metabolism and enhances desire in monkeys.

The discovery results give the understanding how the the female Viagra drug called flibasterin may be working in the woman’s brain by changing metabolic brain activity and making to increase the female response reaction to the males affection.

David Abbott, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology in the UW School of Medicine and Public Health, and Alexander Converse, associate scientist at UW–Madison’s Waisman Center decided to investigate the effect of flibasterin on marmosets at the Wisconsin National Primate Research Center. Marmosets are monkeys for which pair bonding plays an important role in the successful mating and family life. They choose the this animal because marmosets and humans are similar in mating behaviours and in hormonal signalling activitye specially in response to such sexual cues as touches and scents.

Professor Abbott explained that the female marmosets in their study provided effective, unparalleled, controlled models, which allowed them to determine how flibanserin acts in the primate brain.

In a new study Converse and Abbott mapped the animals’ brains with MRI scans to compare changes in brain on chemical level, especialy the glucose use at specific locations of flibanserin-induced behavioral changes.

The scientists found that glucose metabolism declined in the area of the hypothalamus, a brain area associated with intimate grooming and solicitation of sex in marmosets . The amount of metabolic declines directly depends on increasing in grooming by a male partner. In brief, the bigger the metabolic dip in brain activity, the more grooming.

Abbott admites that metabolism in the prefrontal cortex, a brain center involved in assessing events and deciding on actions, was also reduced in females receiving flibanserin drug. Also he notes. “The amount of decline predictably increased mutual grooming.

The research by the University of Wisconsin-Madison was funded by the pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim, which developed flibanserin till 2011. After that the development of the drug was took over by Sprout Pharmaceuticals that received FDA approval for the drug at the begining of this year.

The scientists note that more research is needed to understand the underlying mechanisms of how this new drug works and so that the treatment and safety can be improved. The intimate attention inspired by the drug increased, but there is much ways to improve flibanserin as well as related drugs. Unlike Viagra, where one pill has an effect, flibanserin, sold under the brand name Addyi, must be taken over time to have an effect. But it can help females with hypoactive sexual desire disorder, who experience difficulties or even impossibilities in physical intimacy.
